How many times have you been told to love yourself? High-five if you’ve been told that self-love is the tablet to fix all your problems?
How many times have you scrolled through your gram, only to be flooded with carefully curated images of “influenzas” doing yoga poses, sipping a turmeric latte, reading self-love blogs and snapping #nofilter selfies under the banner of self-love mental health?
We feel pressured every day by gloating ‘gurus’ on Instagram to ‘love ourselves,’ as if it’s as easy as a 10-step skin-care routine.
In reality, self-love meaning is living like a human, making the best of what one has, and enduring this mind-boggling, nonsensical journey of life.
Self-love is an oddly overused term that keeps changing with every person. Apparently, people can do anything under the tag of practising self love and self care .
Despite 10 million hashtags under the name of self-love on Instagram, we have gotten it wrong. We still feel that acts of choosing yourself first and self-love are selfish.
Let’s clear the misconceptions first! This is the perfect time for us to comprehend the difference, very simply (I promise even a 5-year-old would get it).
Self-love meaning is simply the act of putting yourself first.
For instance–Somebody asks to take a photocopy of your textbook before an exam, but you plan on taking a break after 2 hours, so you politely tell them that they can do that when you take a break. Now you choose to put yourself first here, but it will waste 2 hours of that person’s time – it can hurt them but that is not your responsibility – you can be kind and empathetic about that – but you need not blame yourself.
Selfish – It is you vs them. Selfish is when you consciously do something intending to cause emotional, physical, or mental harm to someone and hurt them for your personal gain.
For instance – When you don’t want to give them your notes so you waste their time even when you are not studying and keep telling them you will give them the book in a while but don’t end up giving, you consciously rob their time. Now, this is selfish.
In order to create your identity, you have to work on your brand and explicitly practice it to make it clear to others
Everything else is a byproduct.
To me, self-love is a lifelong process of choosing yourself first, and I am here to hold your hand in your personal journey of self-love. As I have been on the other side and came out of it stronger and brighter than ever before.
